*****

I climbed Mount Sunflower in June 1974.

At this point, you could drive right up to the summit which was then decorated with a cattle skull. The plains rolled out forever.

Since then, Mount Sunflower has been upgraded with a picnic shelter and a attractive steel sculpture made of railroad spikes. There is a mailbox, a little rail fence enclosing the area, and a plaque indicating that "nothing happened here in 1897"

Mount Sunflower is less than a mile from Colorado (and very close to Colorado’s lowest point!).

None of the surrounding towns is more than 4,000 people. Other than the highpoint, the most excitement in these parts is the Rattlesnake Roundup at Sharon Springs in May. Contact (785) 852-4473 for more information. And this page is opposed to the roundup. Get more information on Wallace County
